Creating Equity & Building Pathways

Championing the voices and aspirations of young women

This fall we hosted an intimate luncheon with prominent female leaders in Boston. The event focused on creating pathways for young women, and attendees included Boston Globe Managing Director, Linda Henry; Dimock Center President & CEO, Dr. Myechia Minter-Jordan; Founder & CEO of Flowetik, Zamawa Arenas; SA Board Member and Former President & CEO of the Home for Little Wanderers, Joan Wallace-Benjamin; and Audrey Epstein Reny and Esta Epstein, founders of the Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation at Brigham & Women’s Hospital.

Hosted by Scholar Athletes board members Sandy Edgerley and Regina Robinson, the luncheon featured remarks from Scholar Athletes staff member and former Zone member, Paola Villatoro-Maradi. Paola spoke about her experience as a Zone member and soccer player at Boston Latin Academy as well as how crucial the Zone and staff are to the young people we serve. As the Scholar Athletes program assistant at Boston International Newcomers Academy (BINCA), Paola urged guests to share their own words of inspiration for her to bring back to the female Zone members at Scholar Athletes.

Sitting in Lydia Shire’s Towne Stove & Spirits and inspired by the collective breadth of experience and leadership, guests shared favorite quotes and motivational messages to encourage and uplift our Zone members. Check out a few examples below, and connect with Scholar Athletes on Facebook to see more as we continue to share them this winter:
