Yesica could have been doing anything else that high school students with big dreams like to do with their time. But over the past few years, she spent more than 330 hours in the Zone, our in-school sanctuary for intensive tutoring, mentoring, wellness and college prep.
That’s because she knew that college was the key to realizing her dream of possibly becoming a social worker one day, and while she wanted to attend Regis College, she wasn’t eligible for federal student aid.
Several days a week, Yesica headed to the Zone and doubled down on her studies, taking advanced classes, balancing late nights and early mornings, and serving as the soccer team captain.
It paid off. She earned an A average. Still, off in the not-too-distant future, the unanswered questions lingered: would she make it to Regis, and how would she pay for it?
The surprise of a lifetime
One day last spring, Yesica’s teacher called her to the library, where to her surprise, her fellow Zone members were waiting – ready to present her with a full tuition scholarship to Yesica’s dream school, Regis College.
It was happening. Tears, smiles, and hugs. This month, Yesica is packing her bags as a rising sophomore at Regis, ready to work on her career and show other young people that they have a chance, like her.
This scholarship is a product of Yesica’s hard work and serious determination. But it simply could not have happened without supporters like you. The skills young people acquire in the Zone equip them to become tomorrow’s leaders. We need you to help make that next step possible.
It all starts here.
When you donate to Scholar Athletes, you directly fund the scholarships we’ve been able to grant to students like Yesica. This fall, a new class of rising high school seniors will stream into our 24 Zones across Boston and Springfield.
It starts right here. Who will you inspire this year?
