Organization Overview: Scholar Athletes (SA) is a 501 (c)(3), nonprofit organization that was launched in 2009 with the support of former Boston mayor Thomas M. Menino and former Boston Public Schools (BPS) Superintendent Dr. Carol Johnson, in response to a series of Boston Globe articles that identified deficiencies within BPS’ athletic programming. With Suffolk Construction’s CEO John Fish as the founder, SA is a multi-million-dollar program designed to reduce the opportunity gap for urban public high school students and pursues this vision across 19 Boston public high schools, 4 Springfield public high schools and Everett High School The program’s mission is based on the proven link between athletic participation and positive academic performance.

Position Summary:

The Media Manager will work collaboratively with the program and development teams to execute overall marketing and communications strategy for Scholar Athletes (SA). This includes managing and monitoring the main SA social media accounts (including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn); managing website content; developing community both internally and externally through media engagement; drafting and updating policies and best practices; offering guidance to other social media account managers and users throughout the organization; and creating original video, image, and collateral content. This position requires excellent writing and design software skills to tell the story of SA in words, graphics, video, and through multi-platform digital conversations. The Media Manager is also responsible for proactively identifying opportunities to share stories in a variety of formats and works closely with the SA team to develop and coordinate engaging content and messaging.

• Develop, execute, and continuously refine media strategy across a variety of platforms (including social media platforms and other media outlets)
• Enhance the brand awareness at SA both internally and externally through the various outlets, e-newsletter development and other identified media strategies
• Manage posting, monitoring, and performance analysis of all social media feeds; execute strategy that reflects weekly posting across all platforms
• Reinforce SA voice and message through online posts, interactions, video projects and other media related activities
• Develop and/or adapt copy, slideshows, and other multimedia content (including video and imagery) for use on various initiatives
• Work to develop and pitch concepts, conduct interviews, and write storyboards for video projects; work with support staff or content experts in development process
• Write stories as assigned about news and events related to SA
• Stay current with industry best practices and monitor news feeds to inform strategies and be responsive to relevant topics and opportunities
• Work proactively with SA leadership to plan media efforts around individual stories, events and related content
• Support internal communication efforts, using multimedia platforms to help craft messages, events, and publicity campaigns
• Advise other SA teams on social media strategy and best practices as needed, and coordinate around specific projects
• Edit copy content as needed

• Bachelor’s degree in communications/marketing/journalism with a minimum of 3 years’ experience
• Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communications skills
• Demonstrated experience designing effective collateral and managing various media production processes
• Must be adept at gathering information through interviews and organizing and compiling data
• Experience working with a youth development organization
• Familiarity with publication on social media platforms
• Strong Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and other design software, including video editing software
• Must be flexible and able to manage deadline-driven projects to completion
• Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to work collaboratively and cross-functionally in a fast paced-environment
