After six years of tremendous service to the Scholar Athletes organization, SA Executive Director Daphne Griffin will be stepping down on March 2, 2020 due to a family medical situation that will call her closer to her loved ones.
Scholar Athletes founder, Board director and Suffolk Construction CEO John Fish shared his thoughts on Daphne’s powerful legacy with SA.
“Daphne’s strong leadership, dedication and passion helped expand our footprint, deepen our impact, solidify our partnerships, increase our visibility and funding, and establish best practices, all with incredible results,” said Fish. “Perhaps most importantly, Daphne served as an approachable mentor, role model and source of hope for thousands of young people by encouraging them to dream big, work hard and prepare for the future. Daphne helped create a strong foundation for us to build on, and for that we will all be eternally grateful.”
Daphne will continue on as a member of the Scholar Athletes community, serving as a member of the SA Board Directors, as well as sharing her wisdom and counsel with the team. She shared her thoughts on this time of service.
“I have never been more honored to lead an organization whose mission I so strongly believe in, to lead a dynamic team dedicated to helping youth realize their unlimited potential, and most of all, to be in service to our future leaders,” she said. “I leave this organization proud of my work in contributing to the legacy that John Fish and Mayor Menino started more than 10 years ago.”
“I am proud of the many accomplishments we reached together with our school partners. So much of it was possible because of incredible and talented staff I have had the pleasure of working with over these years. Together, with your leadership, we have deepened our impact, expanded our reach, and introduced new initiatives that have elevated our work.”
The Scholar Athletes family will miss Daphne’s leadership, and wishes her support during this time as it looks toward a future building on her incredible vision.
With recommendations from the Scholar Athletes Board of Directors, Managing Director of Program Services Cara Gould has been named Interim Executive Director. Cara joined SA in 2018 from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston (BGCB) where she served as senior executive director of operations, and previously to that position she served as executive director of Camp Harbor View, from its founding in 2007 through 2014. Cara is supported by a strong leadership team that includes Tricia Keck, managing director of development, and Dalina Chawalit, managing director of finance and operations. The Board has launched a formal search process for the executive director, which will be led by a retained search firm.
The Scholar Athletes team is grateful for the ongoing commitment of all its supporters as it ensures a strong and smooth transition, and looks forward to the work ahead mentoring tomorrow’s leaders. SA extends its thanks and appreciation to Daphne and Cara.
