Update from SA Founder & Board Chair, John Fish

Scholar Athletes was founded in 2009 on the idea that the lives of under-resourced young people in our cities could be dramatically improved by leveraging the powerful link between youth sports and academics. SA has impacted thousands of student athletes and given them hope for a brighter future by offering mentoring and college preparation services in dedicated physical space (Zones) at their schools. In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted public school systems in Massachusetts and the nation. School buildings in SA host cities of Boston, Springfield and Everett were closed, school sports programs were abruptly halted, and SA programming in the Zones was suspended.

Our team quickly pivoted this spring and provided virtual programming to our Zone members.  However, with many questions about the 2020-21 school year still unanswered, we believe this is an opportunity to re-imagine and transform Scholar Athletes into an exciting and contemporary non-profit organization, unlocking its potential to have an even bigger impact on the lives of our students during these turbulent times.

Scholar Athletes has now entered a transition period. Our plan is to suspend usual SA programming over the next nine months so we can focus on restructuring and reinventing Scholar Athletes for an exciting relaunch for the 2021-22 academic year. During this transition period, we intend to remain connected to our Zone members, sharing information on resources and providing mentoring and educational support.

Our vision for SA is ambitiousto create an organization that will improve educational achievement in the lives of thousands of students across Boston and address some of the deeply rooted causes of educational inequity. The revitalized program will be based on the foundational pillars of access to educational and athletic support, role models as mentors, scholarships to colleges, and early career opportunities. Your unwavering support for SA will assist us in that mission.

Please contact Mack Charles, who will oversee SA operations in this transition period, if you have additional questions: mcharles@wearesa.org or 781-983-7444.

Scholar Athletes has had a tremendous impact on more than 30,000 students over the past eleven years and will soon be better positioned to do much more for Boston and our students. Despite the challenges and uncertainty surrounding the approaching school year, we are excited about what the future holds for Scholar Athletes and our young people. Thank you for your ongoing support and for being such an important part of the SA community.

Sincerely,

John Fish
