Help us welcome our 24th Zone!
On Monday, October 22nd, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno and our Executive Director Daphne Griffin were joined by Springfield Superintendent Daniel Warwick, Assistant Superintendent Lydia Martinez, SA Board Vice Chair Senator Linda Dorcena Forry, American International College President Vince Maniaci, and Principal Thaddeus Tokarz to open the newest Scholar Athletes Zone at Springfield Central High School – now our fourth location in Springfield. That means a brand new Zone where Zone members will participate in our unique programming that blends athletic achievement with academic rigor, health and wellness programming, college planning and much more. This expands our impact to 24 Zones, and we could not be more excited.
And, it means we are poised to serve more than 5,000 young people across the state this year.
In just one and a half months of being open, Springfield Central High School Zone staff had already recruited more than 140 Zone members, nearly 60% of their target for the entire school year. They kicked off the fall by launching the school’s first intramural basketball program, which attracted 30+ participants each week.
In a special moment during the ribbon cutting, SA Executive Director Daphne Griffin and Regional Director Tiffany Holmes “retired” a Scholar Athletes jersey in honor of Mike Martin, the longtime Springfield Public Schools athletic director who will be retiring this year.
Since 2014, Scholar Athletes has worked with the City of Springfield and Springfield Public Schools to open Zones at Putnam Vocational Technical Academy (2014), High School of Science & Technology (2015), High School of Commerce (2017), and now Springfield Central High School (2018). Now in our fifth year of partnership with Springfield Public Schools, we continue to increase participation and surpass our enrollment goals.
Last year we aimed to enroll 630 Zone members across three Zones. We exceeded that target by more than 100 Zone members, reaching a total of 778 participants over the course of the 2017-2018 school year in Springfield alone. This year, we’re striving to engage 900 Zone members in Springfield, and we’re already over halfway there across our four Springfield Zones.
